Royal Traditions Revived: Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie Embrace Rutland’s Unique Custom

In a delightful twist of tradition, and the Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, recently found themselves partaking in an unusual royal custom during their inaugural visit to Rutland, England’s smallest county.

Their presence in this charming region was marked by a centuries-old ritual that left onlookers both amused and intrigued.

The couple’s trip to Rutland was historic, as it was their first time exploring this picturesque locale.

As they toured notable sites such as Oakham Castle, the Duke of Edinburgh Memorial Garden, and Rutland Showground, they were greeted with warmth and curiosity from local residents.

However, the highlight of their visit revolved around a unique forfeit tied to their lack of prior visits.

Traditionally, when peers of the realm or members of the royal household visit Rutland for the first time, they are expected to present a horseshoe as a symbolic gesture.

This custom stems from a rich history linked to the Ferars family, who have deep ties to the area.

Legend has it that Henry de Ferars, Duke William’s master of horse during the Norman conquest, initiated this quirky tradition, which has since become a rite of passage for royals.

As a nod to this age-old custom, Prince Edward and Sophie presented a double horseshoe to be displayed on the walls of Oakham Castle.

This act not only fulfilled their obligation but also paid homage to the local lore that insists on the importance of horseshoes in protecting against misfortune.

Interestingly, the manner in which horseshoes are hung carries significant meaning.

In French tradition, they are displayed upside down, symbolizing that the devil cannot nest at the castle’s base.

Conversely, the British style hangs the horseshoe with the open end facing up, ensuring that luck remains safely contained and does not spill out.

Currently, Oakham Castle boasts nearly 250 horseshoes on display, showcasing the town’s longstanding commitment to this tradition.

However, this number represents just a fraction of the horseshoes that have adorned the castle over the years.

Many were once showcased outside the castle gates but fell victim to theft or have simply vanished over time.
