In a candid revelation, Prince William explained why he opted out of attending the Paris Olympics.
The future King shared that his decision was rooted in a desire to protect his wife, the Princess of Wales, from potential exposure to Covid-19.
Instead of being present at the games, he found himself glued to the television, cheering on the athletes from home.
During a recent visit to a community pool in Burtley, northeast England, the Prince engaged with Olympic and Paralympic swimmers.
This visit aimed to showcase the Royal Foundation’s efforts to enhance access to swimming facilities.
The pool had faced closure due to budget cuts but successfully reopened last month after raising £400,000 through crowdfunding, government support, and contributions from Sports England, along with an undisclosed donation from the Royal Foundation.
William began his visit with an unexpected walkabout, greeting enthusiastic locals who eagerly snapped selfies with him.
Many had been waiting since early morning to catch a glimpse of the royal.
Once inside the pool, he met with Olympians Adam Peaty and Tom Dean, as well as Paralympians Maisie Summers-Newton and Louise Fitts, who proudly displayed their hard-earned medals.
During their conversation, Tom Dean inquired if William managed to make it to Paris.
The Prince candidly replied, “No, I was so keen to come, but after hearing about Covid from someone’s interview, and considering Adam Peaty’s positive test during the games, I made the tough choice.”
He added that with Catherine undergoing chemotherapy, he didn’t want to risk bringing the virus home.
“Adam kindly reminded me that Covid was still a concern,” he noted.
Despite missing the event, the royal couple remained invested, watching the Olympics every day.
In a heartwarming moment, William also shared how their children are embracing swimming.
He mentioned that both he and Catherine have a deep love for the water.
Their son George, in particular, has taken to scuba diving.
