Prince Louis: The Future Duke of Cambridge?

A Title Shrouded in Heartache

In the realm of royal titles, few carry as much weight and history as the Dukedom of Cambridge.

As steps into new responsibilities, speculation arises about whether his youngest son, , might inherit this title.

However, the Dukedom is not just a prestigious label; it comes with a legacy marked by tragedy.

Historically, royal titles have been passed down through generations, often accompanied by significant changes when a new monarch ascends the throne.

Recently, both Prince William and Princess Kate have embraced fresh roles within the royal family, hinting at a shift in dynamics.

When III took the throne, he granted William several new titles, including the esteemed Prince of Wales.

Yet, despite this elevation, William remains the Duke of Cambridge.

As William navigates his royal duties, there’s a possibility that he may choose to pass on the Dukedom of Cambridge to Prince Louis as he matures.

But the title carries an unfortunate history that casts a long shadow.

Before William claimed it as the 8th Duke of Cambridge, the title was steeped in sorrow, dating back to its origins in the 17th century.

The tale begins with King Charles II, who reigned during a tumultuous time.

His nephew, Charles Stuart, the first Duke of Cambridge, tragically passed away at just six months old.

This heartbreaking pattern continued with the second Duke, James Stuart, whose life was cut short by illness, either smallpox or the bubonic plague.

Determined to preserve the title, the king appointed Edgar Stuart as the third Duke of Cambridge.

Sadly, Edgar’s life was also fleeting, lasting only until the age of three.

The fourth holder, Charles Stuart II, faced a similar fate, dying just 35 days after birth.

It wasn’t until Queen Anne’s reign that the title saw a revival.

In 1706, she made George II the fifth Duke of Cambridge, but the title remained dormant for over four decades before it was reissued to Prince Adolphus, the seventh son of King George I.

His son, Prince George, inherited the title, but it quickly faded from existence following his marriage, which was deemed invalid under the Royal Marriages Act of 1772.

Fast forward to 2011, when Prince William married Princess Kate.

On that momentous day, William became the ninth Duke of Cambridge, breaking a 280-year hiatus for the title.
