The traditional title of Prince of Wales, historically held by the heir to the British throne, was bestowed upon Prince William just one day after ascended to the monarchy.

The announcement of Prince William and Kate Middleton as the Prince and Princess of Wales has been a significant moment in the British Royal Family.

Following the passing of II on September 8, 2022, King Charles III made his inaugural address as the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom.

During this televised address, King Charles revealed that Prince William would assume the prestigious title of Prince of Wales, while Kate Middleton would be recognized as the Princess of Wales.

However, it was only recently, this month, that the royal titles were officially confirmed, with the letters patent receiving the seal of approval on February 13.

The official notice from the Crown Office, published in the Official Gazette on Friday, detailed the newly conferred titles.

The proclamation stated that Prince William was to be known as His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, Duke of Cornwall-Rothesay and Cambridge, Earl of Carrick and Strathern, Baron of Renfrew, Baron Carrick-Fergus, KG, KT, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester.

Prince William, aged 40, and Kate Middleton, aged 41, initially received the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from Queen Elizabeth during their wedding in 2011.

With the recent developments, they have also become the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, titles previously held by Charles and , which are used when they are in Scotland.

Despite maintaining their Cambridge titles, the couple now also bear the titles of Earl and Countess of Chester.

The process of acquiring the title of Prince of Wales is not automatic and requires the King’s authorization.

The issuance of a legal instrument known as a patent of letters signifies the monarch’s endorsement of conferring such prestigious titles.

In this case, the letters patent affirming Prince William as the Prince of Wales and bestowing him the title of Earl of Chester have been officially ratified.

King Charles III, aged 74, assumed the throne at a young age, with his formal declaration as the Prince of Wales occurring when he was nine years old.

Unlike his father’s elaborate investiture ceremony at Caernarfon Castle in 1969, Prince William is not expected to undergo a similar public event.

However, it is anticipated that Prince William’s role as the Prince of Wales will be highlighted during King Charles’ coronation scheduled for May 6.

In conclusion, the elevation of Prince William and Kate Middleton to their new royal titles marks a significant chapter in the British Royal Family’s history.

The official recognition of their roles as the Prince and Princess of Wales solidifies their positions within the monarchy and sets the stage for their future contributions to the realm.
