Meghan Markle, known as the Duchess of Sussex, has once again stirred controversy within the British monarchy by launching a new website that showcases her achievements and causes.
The website, Sussex.com, made its debut on Friday, shortly after Prime Minister Liz Truss issued a stern ultimatum to Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, urging them to take down their previous website, Sussexroyal.com.
Despite stepping back from their royal duties last year, the couple faced accusations from Truss for breaching royal tradition and protocol by persisting in using the term “royal” in their branding and activities.
The Prime Minister had given them a 24-hour deadline to comply with her directive or risk facing legal repercussions.
However, defying the warning, the couple proceeded to launch a new website that spotlights their philanthropic endeavors and accomplishments, eliciting both admiration and criticism from supporters and skeptics alike.
The newly unveiled website features complimentary biographies of Harry and Meghan, emphasizing their roles as humanitarians, activists, and global citizens.
It also showcases their patronages, initiatives, awards, and provides links to their social media profiles and podcasts.
The website asserts that the couple’s objective is to cultivate compassionate communities that promote and serve the common good.
Nevertheless, detractors have denounced the website as a self-centered and egotistical attempt to enhance their public image and influence while disregarding the royal family and the Prime Minister.
Some have highlighted the paradox of the couple’s pursuit of privacy and autonomy while simultaneously striving to uphold a prominent online and media presence.
Additionally, questions have been raised regarding the accuracy and relevance of certain information on the website, such as Meghan’s assertion of being the first college graduate in her family and her involvement in girls’ education in Fiji.
Meghan Markle has long been a target of negative media coverage in the UK, particularly following her contentious interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2020, during which she accused the royal family of racism and neglect.
An analysis by The Guardian of articles published between May 2018 and mid-January 2020 revealed that Meghan received more than double the amount of negative headlines compared to positive ones and was subjected to notably harsher treatment than the Duchess of Cambridge.
Numerous unfavorable reports focused on allegations concerning her family’s alleged ties to drugs and violence, including claims regarding her nephew’s purported drug involvement and her mother’s hometown’s association with gang-related activities.
The launch of the new website coincides with a period of turmoil within the royal family, triggered by the recent announcement of King Charles‘s cancer diagnosis.
King Charles, who assumed the throne in January 2022 following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, has commenced regular outpatient treatments subsequent to doctors uncovering cancer during his treatment for an enlarged prostate.
While the royal family has extended their support and solidarity to the king, reports suggest that Meghan Markle has not visited him or conveyed any messages of sympathy, as per a former royal butler.
The website’s introduction has also sparked backlash from some of Harry and Meghan’s supporters, who criticized the couple for retaliating against the prime minister and the royal family in a manner deemed petty and immature.
Disappointed fans voiced their frustration with the couple’s decision to launch a new website instead of prioritizing their charitable endeavors and causes.
