King Charles III is reportedly considering altering a law that would require his official stand-ins to be active members of the royal family.
Currently, the law permits the first four adults in the line of succession to act as councillors of state in the absence of the monarch.
This includes Prince Harry and Prince Andrew.
However, King Charles III aims to amend this regulation, according to insider information.
The 1937 Regency Act allows the spouse of the monarch and the subsequent four adults in line for the throne to serve as councillors of state if necessary.
While the deployment of councillors of state is uncommon, it is not unprecedented.
Earlier this year, Queen Elizabeth II had Prince Charles and Prince William represent her at the state opening of Parliament.
Both Prince Harry and Prince Andrew were also listed as potential councillors of state.
With the current line of succession consisting of Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and Princess Beatrice, there is a possibility that three non-working royals could be eligible to serve as councillors of state.
Sources indicate that King Charles III acknowledges the inconsistency of having inactive royals ready to step into his role when required.
He intends to swiftly revise the law to elevate his brother, Prince Edward, and his sister, Princess Anne.
Furthermore, King Charles III may propose adjustments that would allow individuals outside the line of succession, such as Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William, to serve as councillors of state.
Any modifications to the law must be approved by the Houses of Parliament.
Historically, changes proposed by the monarch necessitate parliamentary endorsement following a formal message from the sovereign.
Following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing on September 8 at the age of 96, King Charles, aged 73, ascended to the throne.
The queen’s funeral is scheduled for Monday, where Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the eldest children of Prince William and Middleton, will participate in the procession alongside their parents.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to follow, while King Charles and Camilla will lead the way.
The funeral service will take place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, commencing at 11 a.m. GMT, 6 a.m. EST.
In a recent statement, King Charles expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and condolences received from around the globe.
He acknowledged the heartfelt tributes paid to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, in various cities across the UK.
Prince Harry reportedly experienced distress after the removal of his grandmother’s initials from his military uniform during a vigil by her coffin, while Prince Andrew retained the royal cipher.
