Royal biographer Andrew Morton suggests that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s decision to relocate to California has inadvertently benefitted Prince Charles and Prince William.
According to Morton, the couple’s departure from the royal family has aligned with Charles’s desire for a more streamlined monarchy, as he has long advocated for a core group within the royal family rather than an expanding one.
The Sussexes’ move to the United States in March 2020 followed a revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year, where they shared insights into their experiences within the royal family.
Discussions about their son’s skin color, tensions between Harry and his father, and Meghan’s struggles with mental health were among the topics discussed during the interview.
Andrew Morton, in his updated biography “Meghan and the Unmasking of the Monarchy,” reflects on the path taken by Meghan, now a mother of two residing in California.
He believes that Harry and Meghan’s relocation has inadvertently supported Charles and William’s long-term vision of a more focused royal family structure.
As the Sussexes distanced themselves from the royal spotlight, Harry has been vocal in criticizing his previous royal lifestyle in various interviews with US media outlets.
He expressed a desire to shield his family from the intense media scrutiny that comes with royal life and to raise his children in a different environment.
Morton notes that while Harry may attempt to portray a more modest image in the US, the couple’s move to Hollywood was not a spontaneous decision.
He suggests that Harry had been contemplating a move to Hollywood and discussing potential interviews with Oprah Winfrey since 2018, indicating a strategic plan rather than a sudden change of heart.
Regarding the monarchy’s future, Morton argues that Harry and Meghan’s influence is waning, potentially benefiting Charles and William’s leadership aspirations for a more compact royal family.
He speculates that under Charles and William’s reign, Harry and Meghan would have assumed a supportive yet subordinate role, particularly as William and Kate Middleton‘s children grow older.
Morton predicts that the attention will shift towards the Sussexes’ children in the US, especially highlighting Lilibet as the first American princess.
While Archie was born in the UK, Lilibet’s status as an American princess is expected to resonate positively with the American public, symbolizing a unique blend of British royalty and American heritage.
