Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are stepping into a new chapter as they return to school this September 2022.
The trio, children of the Prince and Princess of Wales, will be enrolled at Lambourke School in Berkshire, marking significant milestones in their educational journey.
George is now in Year 7, Charlotte in Year 5, and Louis in Year 2.
This transition comes with a notable change in how they are identified at school.
Instead of their previous titles, the children will now use the surname “Wales.”
This adjustment is a nod to their parents’ recent elevation to the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, which they received following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.
Before this significant shift, the young royals were known as George Cambridge, Charlotte Cambridge, and Louis Cambridge.
These names reflected the titles held by their parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, prior to the royal title update.
It’s an interesting evolution that showcases how royal titles can influence even the simplest aspects of life, like a child’s name on a school roster.
The tradition of adopting the surname “Wales” isn’t new.
It dates back to when Prince William and Prince Harry were in school.
They chose to use their father’s former title as their surname, creating a modern legacy within the royal family.
In fact, the public often knows these young royals solely by their first names and titles, leaving surnames largely unspoken.
While the official surname for the royal family can be Mountbatten-Windsor, many members tend to stick with their titles or first names.
Interestingly, the late Queen established a guideline in 1960 stating that male-line descendants without royal titles would take on the Mountbatten-Windsor surname.
However, the children of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have not been granted royal titles, making them a unique case in the royal family structure.
The Mountbatten-Windsor name was first used after the birth of Lady Louise in 2003, marking a modern twist in royal naming conventions.
