Rishi Sunak Opposes Bid to Strip Harry and Meghan of Royal Titles

In a stunning turn of events, the controversy surrounding the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has taken a new twist as Prime Minister MP Rachel Maskell’s proposed legislation faces opposition from Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

The bill, which aims to grant Parliament the authority to remove royal titles, encountered a roadblock today when the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson revealed that Rishi Sunak does not endorse the bill.

Initially focused on stripping Prince Harry of his titles, the bill has now garnered calls for both Harry and Meghan Markle to be stripped of their royal designations.

This development comes at a time when the couple has been openly critical of the royal family, with the release of the first part of their Netflix series intensifying the scrutiny on their royal status.

Conservative MP Bob Seeley has raised concerns over Harry’s comments, hinting at potential legislation that could lead to the couple losing their royal titles.

He emphasized the political ramifications of Harry’s actions, accusing him of denigrating his family and exploiting his personal struggles for public consumption.

Seeley also highlighted the couple’s attacks on key institutions in the country.

Amidst the growing controversy, Employment Minister Guy Oberman has called for a public boycott of Netflix, labeling the couple as “utterly irrelevant.”

Expressing his disapproval of Harry and Meghan’s actions, Oberman criticized their behavior as troubling and emphasized the need to focus on more pressing matters rather than their televised endeavors.

Despite his criticism of the couple, Oberman acknowledged the unacceptable level of media scrutiny the pair faced while residing in the UK.

He underscored the importance of respecting individuals’ privacy and condemned the excessive intrusion into their lives by the media.

The bill introduced by MP Rachel Maskell in June 2022 seeks to grant the monarch or a parliamentary committee the authority to revoke titles, with a specific focus on addressing grievances related to Prince Andrew’s ties to York.

Maskell emphasized the bill’s provisions to empower the monarchy and parliament to strip titles deemed inappropriate, underscoring the need to reassess the relevance of certain titles over time.

The proposed legislation reflects the ongoing debate surrounding the royal family’s titles and the criteria for their retention, particularly in light of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s public criticisms and actions.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the fate of Harry and Meghan’s royal titles remains uncertain, with conflicting opinions and calls for action shaping the discourse surrounding the issue.
